The Aotea essentials pack contains:
1 x Kawakawa Balm
Our multi-purpose soothing balm is based on the traditional use of Kawakawa for irritations, abrasions, and inflammation. Kawakawa leaves naturally have high anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and analgesic properties, making their extracts incredibly beneficial for relieving skin issues. Made with Sweet Almond and Mānuka Oil, and beeswax from our own beehives, this Kawakawa Balm is the natural and native skincare remedy that is perfect for dry lips, skin irritations (eczema and psoriasis), bites, sores, and nappy rash.
1 x Kūmarahou and Mānuka Hand & Body Wash
A gentle wash containing kūmarahou and mānuka honey to effectively cleanse without stripping the skin. Kūmarahou, Pomaderris Kumarahou, has a very high saponin content. Saponin is a surfactant, which means that it can naturally foam into a lather. Most conventional soaps contain chemicals to create foam. Kūmarahou was traditionally referred to as 'gum diggers soap', as the gum diggers of the 1800s would use kūmarahou and water to remove kauri gum or tree sap from their hands when they were working. We have included mānuka oil in our formulation, acting as a powerful natural disinfectant. This hand and body wash is beautifully gentle, very healing, and 100% natural.
1 x Mānuka Oil
A multi-purpose, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal oil that effectively cleans the skin. This oil has a wide range of uses such as treating acne, as well as reducing general redness and inflammation by clearing congested pores. You can also use it to naturally treat cuts, abrasions, and to support wound healing by killing infection-causing bacteria. Research shows that Mānuka oil contains a vast range of terpenoids that inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. It is 30x more powerful than Tea Tree Oil and is considered to be one of the most potent 100% natural disinfectants on the planet.
Handmade in small batches on Aotea. Products may vary slightly from batch to batch.

Science:
Macropiper Excelsum, better known as Kawakawa, is incredibly healing. Research shows that it decreases inflammatory markers of nitric oxide. It possesses bioactives, Myrsiticin and Diayangambin that are anti-inflammatory. When your Aotea Kawakawa Balm is applied, these bioactives seep into the inflamed or damaged tissue to reduce swelling and aid the healing process. Further the beeswax creates a natural protective seal and the mānuka oil is deeply cleansing. Your Kawakawa Balm is 100% natural and made of only three ingredients; Kawakawa infused sweet almond oil, Mānuka oil and beeswax.
Research shows that Mānuka Oil contains a vast range of terpenoids that inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. It is 30 x more powerful than Tea Tree Oil and it is considered to be one of the most potent, 100% natural, disinfectants on the planet.

Aotea
A range of New Zealand made health products inspired by traditional Māori herbal remedies and supported by scientific research.
Aotea was founded in 2017 – inspired by mātauranga māori (māori knowledge) and this knowledge manifests itself in their range of therapeutic skincare. Aotea is the māori name for Great Barrier Island and it is here where they are from and where they grow the native flora they use (and extract their oils) and spin these into the products in their range. This is all done by their team on their papakāinga (land).
What is important is what they do brings opportunity to the community where they are based on Aotea. In light of which they have decided (despite the difficulty) to grow, extract and manufacture all the products rather than outsource this. Aotea is proud to say that for every year they have been in business they have provided scholarships to their rangatahi māori to attend high school and they are in the process of creating more jobs for whānau.
What is also important to Aotea is spearheading the science that will give credibility to the anecdotal history and knowledge māori have for the healing flora of Aotearoa. They now have a committed R&D team to determine innovative ways to not only extract some of the plant agents in the flora they use but also undertake clinical tests of these plant agents.
